CYWC stands for Canadian Youth Workers Community.

Originally beginning as a national conference, CYWC has grown over the past decade into a community of youth workers committed to helping the next generation see and experience the truth of Jesus Christ.

We gather together at our Regional Training Events, which started as a once a year national conference that rotated between Vancouver and Toronto led by Marv Penner. In 2013, Marv partnered with Sid Koop and Truth Matters Ministries, turning it into a regional conference in 6 different locations across Canada, expanding to 8 in 2017-18.

Session Intensive pré-congrès
Youth Ministry in an Age of Anxiety

Format + Purpose

In the morning, either Brett Ullman or Walt Mueller will help us better understand the issues contributing to the current state of mental health. Then in the afternoon, together we will “workshop” ways we need to respond, specifically ways that will help us care for and build resilience in our students, equip our leaders, and inform our parents. This time will be lead by Sid Koop, Jason Ballard and others, with the purpose of walking away from the day with tools and a specific plan for engaging this issue in a Christ centred redemptive way.

Why Anxiety + Mental Health?

In March of 2019, Time Magazine reported that between 2009 and 2017, rates of depression among kids ages 14-17 increased by more than 60%. The increases were nearly as steep among those ages 12 to 13 (47%) and 18 to 21 (46%).  In 2017, more than one in eight 12 to 25 year olds experienced a major depressive episode.

This year at CYWC during our pre-conference critical concerns, we will explore the causes of the crisis our students are experiencing, and the redemptive role Jesus would have us play during a time such as this.

Alpha Youth is typically run over 9 weeks with a weekend/day away. In each session you eat food, watch a talk, and discuss questions in small groups.

  • Food has a way of bringing people together and building community. So even if it’s a light snack, sweets or a full meal, Alpha always starts with food.

  • The talks tackle core questions about life and faith from a Christian perspective. There are 9 weekly episodes and 4 episodes for the Alpha Weekend/Day. Each episode averages 23 minutes in length.

  • Throughout each episode, there are three discussion breaks. These breaks give everyone a chance to share thoughts and ideas in small groups without fear of being corrected or judged.

  • Along the way there are opportunities to experience worship through music and moments for prayer.

  • All of this is done in a fun environment where anyone is welcome.

Soirée des parents

Parenting teenagers today is not for the faint of heart.

The challenges of technology, the pervasiveness of consumerism, the complexity of the cultural waters our kids swim in each day, and the confusion around important moral questions… it can feel overwhelming at times. And yet the role of parents in the lives of their sons and daughters remains clear: Parents are the best positioned to influence and shape the hearts of their kids. Parents are consistently present (or absent) as role models of healthy adulthood. Parents are the voice that kids will hear in their hearts (for good or for evil) for the rest of their lives.

So this year at CYWC we are hosting a night for parents on Thursday with our keynote communicator (Walt Mueller or Brett Ullman) delivering insight, understanding, and practical tools to help parents in their greatest responsibility — raising the next generation.

Click below for graphics that you can use to invite every and any parent you know.
