HELPING TEENAGERS IN CRISIS

Most of the kids we work with are hurting much more deeply than we or they are willing to admit. They face the deep wounds of betrayed trust, broken relationships, and out-of-control behaviours. The purpose of this Learning Lab is to affirm the significant role that you can have as a caring, involved, non-parental adult in the life of a teenager in crisis. Marv will give you some practical help in determining appropriate responses to some of the wild stuff you encounter with kids and you’ll be introduced to a number of basic but important people-helping skills.

This Learning Lab will explore one of the Core Competencies that we believe are important to be a well-equipped youth worker. LEARN MORE

CREATING ENVIRONMENTS WHERE STUDENTS STICK AROUND

MEDIA.FAITH.CULTURE

As Christians, we need to actively be involved with our culture without blindly accepting it as true. Pascal said it wonderfully, “The greatest enemy of the spiritual life was inattention, complacency.” No more thoughtless watching. No more thoughtless listening. No more thoughtless online activity. No more thoughtless anything… Christianity is a strategic, intentional daily pursuit.

GROWING A MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIP WITH A TEENAGER FROM A-Z

Relationships are the bridges over which meaningful youth ministry happens. If there is no relationship, there is no opportunity for positive influence. Unfortunately, relationships between adults and young people do not happen automatically, yet everything our research is telling us is that adolescents who have a healthy, positive relationship with a non-parental adult do better in almost every area of life. This Learning Lab will explore ways to begin, build, and maintain healthy relationships with teenagers and will look at ways those relationships can become the context for effective disciple making.

CROWD SOURCED LEARNING LAB

You have ideas that need to be shared across the country, so for the first time ever at CYWC we are turning the tables and making YOU** the communicator in our Learning Labs. On Saturday, you’ll be able to select from one of the following questions to join in and give us your answers, ideas, thoughts, or suggestions. You’ll also get a chance to hear from other youth workers who have ideas that we know you’ll want to learn from. Then, at the end of the weekend, we’ll compile all the ideas into one master document of brilliance and ship it back to you.

**Special note to all the introverts that are now nervous and sweaty, thinking someone is going to make them talk in front of a crowd of strangers -- participation by giving ideas is purely voluntary. =)

COACH APPROACH TO DISCIPLESHIP

How can you enter into deeper conversations with your students? How can you empower students to take ownership of their faith decisions? How can you support a student’s capacity to learn and grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ? One way is taking the coach approach and asking great questions. Research is showing that the simple sharing of knowledge and facts is often not enough to generate change in thinking, beliefs, and attitudes.
