HELPING TEENAGERS IN CRISIS

Most of the kids we work with are hurting much more deeply than we or they are willing to admit. They face the deep wounds of betrayed trust, broken relationships, and out-of-control behaviours. The purpose of this Learning Lab is to affirm the significant role that you can have as a caring, involved, non-parental adult in the life of a teenager in crisis. Marv will give you some practical help in determining appropriate responses to some of the wild stuff you encounter with kids and you’ll be introduced to a number of basic but important people-helping skills.

This Learning Lab will explore one of the Core Competencies that we believe are important to be a well-equipped youth worker. LEARN MORE

THE JESUS FORMULA

Jesus lead the greatest rescue mission in history and launched a movement that continues to change our world. The same “why” and “how’s” of His ministry can radically transform ours and set us up to leave a lasting impact.

GROWING A MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIP WITH A TEENAGER FROM A-Z

Relationships are the bridges over which meaningful youth ministry happens. If there is no relationship, there is no opportunity for positive influence. Unfortunately, relationships between adults and young people do not happen automatically, yet everything our research is telling us is that adolescents who have a healthy, positive relationship with a non-parental adult do better in almost every area of life. This Learning Lab will explore ways to begin, build, and maintain healthy relationships with teenagers and will look at ways those relationships can become the context for effective disciple making.

This Learning Lab will explore one of the Core Competencies that we believe are important to be a well-equipped youth worker. LEARN MORE

Q&A: THINKING REDEMPTIVELY ABOUT MINISTRY WITH STUDENTS WHO IDENTIFY IN THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY

CROWD SOURCED LEARNING LAB

You have ideas that need to be shared across the country, so for the first time ever at CYWC we are turning the tables and making YOU** the communicator in our Learning Labs. On Saturday, you’ll be able to select from one of the following questions to join in and give us your answers, ideas, thoughts, or suggestions. You’ll also get a chance to hear from other youth workers who have ideas that we know you’ll want to learn from. Then, at the end of the weekend, we’ll compile all the ideas into one master document of brilliance and ship it back to you.

**Special note to all the introverts that are now nervous and sweaty, thinking someone is going to make them talk in front of a crowd of strangers -- participation by giving ideas is purely voluntary. =)

LEADING A SMALL GROUP

If you lead a small group, you believe in the power of community. You believe that the teenagers in your group need the unique kind of influence that you offer. But what exactly do you do? It’s possible that you may feel lost at times. Are you supposed to get through every question on this list? How do you navigate the off-topic conversations? Who’s job is it to discipline any misbehaviours? Let’s clarify your responsibility as you lead a small group by establishing some common actions of successful group leaders so you can be more confident heading into your group this week.

PASSING ON SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES TO TEENAGERS

You know that your teenagers should be developing their own spiritual disciplines and practices, but how do you encourage them to take that step? How can you move from just telling them about a relationship with the Living God and instead actually help them discover and grow in that relationship themselves? In this Learning Lab we will explore the real ways that you can pass on spiritual disciplines in such a way that students will apply them into their own lives.

INVITED. CELEBRATED. NEEDED. INCLUDING TEENS WITH DISABILITIES IN OUR CHURCH COMMUNITIES

What does it mean to create a space of belonging for teenagers with disabilities? Does this even matter? Today 10-15% of teenagers are diagnosed with a disability or special need and desperately struggle to find community, friendship and a place they feel included. The church has an incredible opportunity to make a huge impact in this marginalized community that exists in our own backyards. Here we'll discuss practical tips that will make a life-changing impact.

BLINDSPOTS IN LIFE + MINISTRY

Most leaders have blind spots – areas in which we have trouble seeing clearly our own biases, weaknesses or bad habits. Either we are too busy to identify our blind spots or pride stands in the way of us recognizing them.  These blind spots are of concern to us in ministry and in life because they affect our relationships and ultimately our effectiveness.  You may have heard recently of some leaders of some dynamic churches whose blind spots sabotaged their ability to minister.  These leaders seemed unaware that their behavior was wrong and even justified their actions.  Obviously, we don’t have the time to resolve all our blind spots in this workshop but you will be exposed to some great tools that can help us on the journey of discovering these weaknesses and start the road to recovery!

CANNABIS: CATCHING UP ON THE CONVERSATION

What should you know about cannabis (marijuana)? How are you supposed to engage in conversations about cannabis as a follower of Jesus? What about engaging in these conversations with the teenagers in our groups -- how should you approach the conversation? In this lab, we will discuss all aspects of cannabis: chemical make-up, effects, statistics, the positives, the negatives, legalization, and the teachings of our Biblical authors.
